3 best breeds that make up the Miniature Golden Retriever

How our Mini Golden's came to be

I have been getting a lot of great questions about how and why we are mixing the Miniature Golden Retriever. Here at Taylormade we started with the Miniature Golden Retriever being a mix of Cocker Spaniel and Golden Retriever. This started all the way back in 1989 when I was 10-years- old with a passion for dogs. We bred our little Golden Retriever Cocker mix dog. Our family fell in love with these dogs! They were so sweet intelligent, loyal, adorable, a perfect medium size, and wonderful family dogs. My grandparents wanted a puppy, and my friends, and neighbors wanted one too. They had all the wonderful traits and look of a Golden Retriever except smaller size!

Here is my 10-year-old self with my first Miniature Golden Retriever Muffin Lacey or "Muffy" for short. She was a mix between the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel.

Fast forward to present time and things have changed a bit, now we can register these wonderful designer breeds. Before they were considered a mutt, now it's a sleek designer breed.

Today Muffy would be considered a Golden Cocker Retriever by the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR). We love the Golden Cocker Retrievers but... We also wanted a Registered Miniature Golden Retriever as well and the IDCR only considers a Miniature Golden Retriever a cross between a Golden Retriever, a Cocker Spaniel, and a Poodle. To Create a registered Miniature Golden Retriever we needed the 3 way mix, like Mia here. Mia has taken us 4 years to produce!

The Interesting thing is that the puppies do not always take on the Golden Retriever look like Mia. Some puppies have more of the Goldendoodle look. Coop and Einstien pictured below are from the same litter. You can see that Coop (pictured on the right) has taken on more of the Golden Retriever look and Einstien (pictured on the left) has taken on more of the Goldendoodle look. Both puppies are exceptionally cute!

Why is it optimal to mix these three breeds for the Miniature Golden Retriever?

  1. From my experience breeding these mixes are that the it's a wonderful marriage of the 3 breeds smaller size.
  2. A beautiful Golden Retriever with a calmer dog.
  3. The cocker Spaniel breeds the smaller size into the dog and I have seen a reduction in the extended puppy period often associated with Golden Retrievers. The extended puppy period is a personality trait some Golden Retrievers have where they act like a puppy for the first 2 years, chewing on things, hyper behavior, and a little difficulty training.
  4. The poodle also brings down the size if you are using a miniature poodle, increases the intelligence, and reduces the shedding.

This creates a wonderful medium sized dog, that is smart and easy to train, sheds less, or not at all, perfection right?

How is the Miniature Golden Retriever bred?

It can get pretty intense getting these sweet baby puppies into the world, but it soooo worth it! Here is a short video of Annie (Standard Goldendoodle) being artificially inseminated (or AI) with Emmett's (Cocker Spaniel) sperm. Often times this breed does not occur without our help because we want to make sure our mom's and our dad's our safe. With a 60 lb mama and a 25 lb daddy we intervene on their behalf. These dogs belong to my affiliate breeder Dr. Terri Gibbs

After the AI we wait....  One month later, an Ultrasound confirms there are at least 7 puppies in Annie. Annie actually ended up having 10 puppies on April 15th, 2018; 3 more than the ultrasound showed.

We have puppies available for adoption through our affiliate breeder.

Here is Uncle Kona (Emmett's Brother) with our dearly missed friend, Mallory. She was one of the most AMAZING people and founder of Lunges4Lungs a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis transplant research. We will always remember and be inspired by her love and happiness. We are so happy Kona could serve her in any way possible during her short time on this earth. Our hearts and prayers go out to her wonderful family.
