If you knew better, would you do better?

What if you knew that there was something you could do to reduce your need to take your puppy to the Vet?

In my course to become the best breeder and dog advocate that I can, I have learned so much and I am still learning. For example when we started breeding Mini Golden Retrievers way back in 1989, I had no idea how poor quality food could have such an impact on a dog’s health. We fed whatever grocery store coupon my mom cut from the weekly newspaper the bag said 100% complete nutrition, right? Our dogs seemed to do just fine. They got a lot of love, sunshine, exercise, and fresh air back then. As time went on I noticed our litter sizes got smaller and smaller and our mama dog’s eyes and coat turned dull. I just chalked it up to normal aging. Then one of our beloved Cocker Spaniel dog’s, Chloe, started to have terrible skin issues. she had huge lesions that oozed, and she smelled awful and she scratched and licked constantly. We went to the vet several times over a year and the treatments and tests kept getting more extensive and expensive and weren’t working. I felt so bad for Chloe and we decided that she would be best in a home were she was the main focus. I found a wonderful home with, Tammy who became my good friend. She had lost her dog to cancer and had done everything to save her dog. She had the budget and time to really care for Chloe. I missed Chloe so much and Tammy would bring her to me for grooming every 6 weeks. Within the first 6 weeks Chloe came for grooming her skin looked good and it was healing. I asked Tammy what she had done because none of the treatments we sent with her had seemed to work??? She told me she switched Chloe to a really high quality dog food that didn’t contain corn, wheat, or soy (as those are inflammatory foods) she also put her on some supplements and the skin issues cleared up right away! I was absolutely blown away that all it took was a diet change and some supplements to cure Chloe! Why didn’t anyone tell me to switch to a better nutrition system? I felt so sad that I didn’t know food quality could play such a huge role in health. After that I started researching food and getting as much information as I could. We tried lots of different foods and supplements, I found out that it’s important to get your food from a trusted source because the package doesn’t tell you everything. From my research and opinion Big Commercial dog food companies cut corners and spend more on advertising than quality ingredients, leaving pet foods drained of nutrition. Chloe’s skin disorder taught me a lot and I found more and more information as the years have gone on to help me make better and better nutrition decisions for our dogs and family for that matter.

Here I am with Chloe in 2009 so excited to show she was healing! I wish I had a better before photo to compare.

2009, Chloe recovering from her skin issues.

Not a great photo, but you can kind of see spots in the black areas of her coat.

Fast forward to now and I have really found there are a lot more options for good pet Nutrition and I have found PawTree to be a trusted source. This company was founded on the premise that they would not compromise in quality as was going on in the Big Box companies. I have a serious vested interest in the health of our dogs and puppies and if you look at recalls on pet food coming out everyday you can see that having a transparent, trusted company to partner with made sense to me for our dogs.
