Mini Golden Retriever vs Goldendoodle: Which Dog Is Best for Your Family?
If you’ve been researching family companion dogs, chances are you’ve come across both the Mini Golden Retriever and the Goldendoodle. While both can make wonderful pets, there are some important differences families may want to consider when choosing the best fit for their lifestyle.
At Taylormade Mini Goldens, my love for this breed began in the 1980s when my father found me a Golden Retriever/Cocker Spaniel puppy named Muffy. Muffy was beloved by family and neighbors, and many wanted dogs like her. My parents and I researched and began intentionally breeding the first Mini Golden Retrievers. To learn more about our history I have a little blog that goes into more detail.
At Taylormade Mini Goldens, we’ve spent years intentionally developing our Mini Golden Retriever lines with a focus on temperament, family companionship, manageable size, and lower-shedding coats — while still preserving the classic Golden Retriever look and personality so many families love.

Temperament & Energy Levels
One of the biggest differences many families notice between Mini Golden Retrievers and Goldendoodles is overall temperament and energy level.
Goldendoodles are often playful, intelligent, and energetic dogs. Depending on the lines used, some can also be very high-drive/hyper and active companions.
In our experience, Mini Golden Retrievers tend to have a softer and calmer overall demeanor while still being affectionate, playful, and eager to please. Cricket in the video below can be active and playful but when working she becomes calm and focused.
Part of this comes from the intentional lines we’ve selected in our program. Along with Golden Retrievers, our lines have incorporated carefully selected show-line Cocker Spaniels chosen specifically for their family-oriented temperaments and calmer companionship traits rather than high-drive hunting lines.
While every dog is unique, many of our families describe their Mini Goldens as:
affectionate
emotionally intuitive
easy to live with
wonderful with families and children
easier to settle in the home
very low amount of shedding in our low shedding lines
Temperament is something we intentionally prioritize in our breeding program.
Pictured below we have our 13-year-old daughter working with Tristan (28 lbs.) who is easy to train and very engaged. The video is Jeff working with Cricket (21 lbs.) on heel and she is doing excellent keeping a calm steady walk.

Grooming & Coat Maintenance
Another major difference between Mini Goldens and Goldendoodles is coat maintenance and grooming needs.
Goldendoodles are known for their curly coats and teddy bear appearance, but many doodle coats require frequent professional grooming every 6–8 weeks to prevent matting and maintain coat health.
Mini Golden Retrievers typically have a softer double coat more similar to a traditional Golden Retriever. While they still require brushing and regular maintenance, many families find the coat easier to care for overall.
One thing many families appreciate is that Mini Goldens generally do not require routine shaving like most doodle coats do. As a matter of fact it’s not recommended to shave the coat to keep the protective qualities of the double coat in place. Brushing with a de-shedding rake is ideal to keep and beautiful soft coat and remove any loose hair. No major trip to the expensive groomer required.
At Taylormade Mini Goldens, we have also intentionally selected genetics that can help reduce shedding while still preserving the beautiful feathering and classic Golden Retriever appearance families love.
The Classic Golden Retriever Look
For many families, appearance matters too.
Goldendoodles often have facial furnishings — the longer hair around the eyes and muzzle that creates the doodle look many people recognize.
While some families love that style, others are specifically searching for the softer expression, feathering, and classic smile associated with the Golden Retriever.
Our goal with the Mini Golden Retriever has been to preserve that traditional Golden Retriever appearance in a smaller companion dog.
Although there is some Poodle influence further back in portions of our lines, we have intentionally bred away from heavy facial furnishings in order to maintain the softer Golden Retriever face and expression many families are drawn to.
The result is a dog that often combines:
a more manageable size
lower shedding tendencies
a softer family temperament
and the classic beauty of the Golden Retriever
Coat & Trait Predictability
Another thing families may not realize is that Goldendoodles can vary quite a bit in:
coat type, can be more thick and course
shedding level; goldendoodles tend to grow long hair and shedding is reduced but can vary based on gentics, tends to tangles easily.
grooming needs; high need for extensive and regular grooming
energy level; tend to be on the higher spectrum of energy which requires more training depening on genetic lines and training
overall appearance; this varies greatly in the breed.
Mini Golden Retrievers can offer a bit more consistency in overall appearance and temperament depending on the breeding goals and lines we are using.
At Taylormade Mini Goldens, we carefully select for:
temperament~ we carefully choose our parent dogs for wonderful temperament and plan pairings to compliment different traits
family companionship~ we first bred these dogs for our own family
manageable size~ while we can’t guarantee exact size—mother nature has the final say. We DNA-test the parents to identify genes associated with smaller stature and selectively breed to increase the likelihood of producing smaller dogs.
coat goals- we use DNA testing to genetically lower shedding in the Taylormade Mini Golden, while keeping the sold silky golden Retriever feel
health testing~ Each parent dog undergoes genetic screening and comprehensive reproductive evaluation by our veterinarian, including PennHIP and OFA testing, to help increase the likelihood of producing healthy puppies.
and overall balance~ because we believe people deserve a dog that not only looks beautiful, but also fits naturally into everyday life.
